6 Creative Ways to Stand Out in the Job Search! (guest blog by Peggy McKee)
6 Creative Ways to Stand Out in the Job Search! (guest blog by Peggy McKee) 0 Flares 0 Flares This post was guest blogged by Peggy McKee of the Medical Sales Recruiter Tips Quips Blog. Peggy is also the founder of PHC Consulting, a nationally recognized medical sales and life sciences industry search firm. Canât get an interview? Canât get past the first interview? Are you demonstrating the levels of commitment, drive, tenacity, skills and organization employers want? Here are 6 tried and true ways to separate you from other candidates and be the candidate everyone wants to hire: 1. Preparation = SWOT Analysis: SWOT is a strategic planning tool. It stands for Strengths (attributes helpful to achieving the objective), Weaknesses (attributes harmful to achieving the objective), Opportunities (external conditions that will be helpful to achieving the objective), and Threats (external obstacles or conditions that will harm the process). Look at the pictureâ"it helps. Doing a SWOT analysis on the company demonstrates your drive, commitment, and skills, along with helping you create a better 30/60/90-day plan. Click here for advice on how to do one and avoid mistakes. 2. 30/60/90-Day Plan : A 30-60-90-day plan is a short, 1-3 page outline for what you will do when you start the job. Essentially, you spell out for your future employer, in as little or as much detail as necessary, how you will spend your timeâ"in training, learning company systems, introducing yourself to customers, and your initial plan to build sales. It demonstrates exactly how youâll be an asset. A 30/60/90-day plan is an almost-guaranteed way to impress any hiring manager or hiring team. If you absolutely canât get an interview, you could try e-mailing your 30/60/90-day plan to the sales manager. Itâs an attention-getter, and it could be the key to get you in the door. 3. Video or Audio Communication -: Send the interviewer an audio of video clip of yourself. Keep it short and sweet, and make sure youâve checked lighting, background, and sound quality. One idea: Structure it like an elevator pitchâ"what can you do for the company and why can you do it? 4. Brag Book : A brag book is a folder/ binder that you can use during your interview process to clarify your skill sets. It can include letters of recommendation, âattaboyâ notes (or any notes commenting on what a good job youâve done), staff ranking, annual reviews (if you include some, include them all), rewards letters, your resume, types of equipment youâve used or marketed, certifications or other educational courses, any financial or PowerPoint presentations, copies of articles youâve written, brochures youâve helped develop, and a college transcript (though ONLY if youâre just getting out). Hereâs a link to a video that explains more. 5. References : Itâs critical that you have winning references. Some people believe that references never get called, but they do. You should know how to choose a good reference, and know with stake-your-job-on-it certainty what they will say about you. You can (and should) even coach them beforehand, to help them tailor their answers to the job. 6. Follow-up/Thank You Notes : Donât underestimate how important thank you letters are in the job interview process. Everybody âknowsâ theyâre critical, but unbelievably, not everyone writes them. Thank you letters accomplish several things: They get your name in front of the hiring manager one more time. They are your last chance to package yourself as the best, most qualified person for the job. They are polite, and manners count. They can be an example of your ability to take in information (the interview) and process and provide feedback or new ideas about whatever the problem was. For example: âI thought about your concerns about how to handle xyz delivery issues, when I was a product manager at ABC corporation, we usedâ¦â¦â¦â (See what I mean?) Handwritten thank-yous are nice, but e-mail thank yous are fast. Sometimes, hiring decisions are made quickly, so a timely note can be critical. I know these things will help you become an outstanding candidate! If you need more personalized help, please see my custom consulting page. If youâre really having trouble, a fresh pair of expert eyes can point out issues or problems that are keeping you from getting the job you want. Accentuate The...Negative (Part 1)
Accentuate The...Negative (Part 1) options, originally uploaded by recovering lazyholic, found via kind over matter As creatives, weâre doubters. We doubt our talent, our ability. We doubt that the world will receive us positively. We doubt we can support ourselves without âstabilityâ. We doubt that what we do is âgood enoughâ, or âunique enoughâ â" or just plain good unique. We worry. We take that Vampire voice, the one that whispers negative thoughts into our heads, listen to it. We let it take away our trust, our enthusiasm, our energy our optimism. Why does The Negative stick, The Positive gets thrown away? In two separate sessions with two separate clients â" artists both â" the theme of positivity/negativity came up, they were eerily similar. One client realized that she can listen to compliments on a loop for 24 hours â" all genuine, all different, all sincere â" without any of them sinking in, while that one negative comment, âYou have no voiceâ or âYou copy other peopleâs workâ lays on her shoulders with every piece she works on. The other client discovered that he was embarrassed to send a link to his website to family friends, even though two of his relatives asked how they could get prints of his work. Even though he was getting positive feedback from putting his photos on his Facebook profile, his Vampire Voice was saying, âYouâre not good enoughâ âYouâre not perfectâ âTheyâre all gonna laugh at you.â So, why is it that we donât allow the positive comments, the kudos the accolades, sink in? Why does the one negative comment â" or the fear of it â" overshadow the 100 positive ones, or hinder our ability to move forward? When we go to paint, or set-up a shot, or perform a song, why does The Negative haunt us? Why donât we allow ourselves to focus on the relatives that want our work hanging in their home, or on the fan emails weâve received saying that something weâve done meant something to someone else? Why canât we accentuate The Positive? I wish I had the answer. Well, I kinda do. I have a few answers, actually. Obviously the same answer wonât apply to everyone, but here are some possibilities: Youâre making yourself unresponsible for your own success. If you hide behind these negative comments, then youâre taking ownership away from yourself. If you donât let your friends family know that you have a website, that website has a shop, that shop will let you order prints, then you have something or someone else to blame when nobody pays you for your work. Youre not in the drivers seat. You use it as excuses to not move forward. Arenât those excuses warm cozy? âIâm unoriginalâ, âIâm embarrassedâ, âWhat if they talk about me behind my back?â Just like a blanket to hide under. You donât want to be vulnerable. Letâs face it, being original unique is freakinâ scary. Putting yourself out there for the world to judgeâ¦shiver. If you just play it safe, then nothing can hurt you. You donât want to set yourself up for disappointment. I spoke in my recent vlog post about covering up The Good Things so it doesnât look like youâre bragging. And, if you start believing The Good Things, then youâre setting yourself up for disappointment. Right? I know I conditioned myself as an actress to never allow a good callback â" one complete with a lot of positive reinforcement â" to make me think I booked something. Because, when I didnât, that wall I spent so much time building up would come tumbling down, Iâd be more than disappointed. Iâd be devastated. But now Iâm a life coach, here to make my clients see all the good they bring into the world, all they have to offer. And letâs face it: we all have something unique to bring to the table. Even if your style of painting or photography or dancing is similar to someone elseâs (thatâs why broad categories like âPop Artâ âModern Danceâ exist), it doesnât mean that itâs a copy. It canât be. If you go to a ballet, do you see the same routine every single time? If you see a still life exhibit, does every bowl of fruit contain the same fruits, shot or painted the same way with the same colors the same style? Of course not. Itâs impossible, really. So how do you embrace you? How do you allow yourself to be vulnerable, and not only hear the positive comments but embrace them, letting them guide you to creating your best work having fun in the process (because, letâs face it, itâs never a good time with a vampire on your back)? Ill be back tomorrow with some ideas, but until then, please comment with your own! Id love to hear how you accentuate The Positive (e-lim-en-ate the negative.)!

Top-Paying Jobs You Can Get Without a 4-Year College Degree
Top-Paying Jobs You Can Get Without a 4-Year College Degree Want a six-figure salary without having to shell out for a bachelorâs degree? Itâs not out of the realm of possibility. With the cost of higher education skyrocketing, people are starting to wonder whether itâs genuinely worth it. While it may be for some, for others there are still plenty of paths to the middle- and even upper-middle class with a two-year associate degree, rather than a full, four-year bachelorâs. What careers pay the most? Air traffic controllers made a median annual salary of $124,540 in 2017, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the highest among occupations that generally require an associate degree. Radiation therapists earned $80,570, and dental hygienists took home $74,070. (Plenty of jobs that only require a high-school diploma pay well too, sometimes rivaling or exceeding those for an associate degree. You can find a list of those here.) The main difference between an associate degree and a bachelorâs degree is the time it takes to takes to complete your education. Bachelorâs degrees typically take four or more years to complete. Associate degrees, on the other hand, are designed to be completed in two â" as long as you are enrolled as a full-time student. This is because the number of credits required to complete the degree is drastically different. Bachelorâs degrees require 120 credits to graduate whereas you only need to complete 60 credits to obtain an associate degree. Because you are taking fewer credits, and time, to complete your degree, the costs are typically lower. Besides saving money on annual tuition, students pursuing associate degrees can also save in other areas like housing, books, supplies and transportation by completing their degree more quickly than their bachelorâs degree candidate counterparts. While the cost of college fluctuates drastically depending on where you decide to go to school, you can finish your associate degree at a two-year institution for about $21,000, on average, whereas a degree from a four-year institution will typically cost you more than $100,000, based on figures from the U.S Department of Education. Of course, choosing a public school over a private school will help curb the cost to complete your degree. And it looks like the number of people pursuing associate degrees is rising. According to a study from the Community College Research Center released in June, associate degrees in humanities and the liberal arts have increased by 88 percent from 218,000 degrees awarded in 2000 to 410,000 degrees in 2015. For air traffic controllers, the pay may be high, but the pressure is high too. What matters is temperament, says Ken Scheele, 38, air traffic controller at Orlando Terminal Radar Approach Control (TRACON). His team handles over 2,000 flights a day, on average. Itâs âthe ability to handle a stressful situation and resolve it quickly,â says Scheele. Scheeleâs base salary is $142,000, and with his bonus and overtime pay, he says he took home over 200,000 in the last year. While having an associate degree is a common route to becoming an air traffic controller. It isnât strictly necessary, according to Scheele. There are other ways to enter the field such as having a mix of work experience and post-secondary education that adds up to three years. Of all professions that typically require an associate degree, dental hygienists are in the highest demand with 13,500 projected annual average job openings between 2016 and 2026. The profession is expected to grow by 20 percent during this time, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Some reasons for the spike in growth are the aging population and increasing evidence that oral health affects individualsâ overall health. Typical requirements for the position are an associate degree or diploma from an accredited school of dental hygiene in addition to your registered dental hygienist license, based on Glassdoor job postings. (An earlier version of this story misstated average figures for two- and four-year degrees.)

6 Avoidable Job Search Mistakes That Scream, Im Unprofessional!
6 Avoidable Job Search Mistakes That Scream, Im Unprofessional 6 Avoidable Job Search Mistakes That Scream, Im UnprofessionalIf your goal is to come across as polished and professional, youll want to avoid these job search mistakes. TWEETYouve waded through the internet job boards. A few listings look like they could be just right. Now, its up to you to impress the hiring manager and get that bewerberbewerbungsinterview. Your resume can do the initial heavy lifting, but every contact you have with a prospective employer affects the way youre seen as a candidate.Avoid these 6 simple mistakes when looking for a job that scream Im unprofessional as you continue your search.1. Your vanity schmelzglasTheres nothing wrong with expressing yourself through a fun, whimsical email address. Yankeefan1aol.com or SweetSassyhotmail.com may be how your friends know you, but that doesnt make them appropriate for professional correspondence.A good rule of thumb is to use your name, first and last. If you have a very common name, you can adjust it by adding a number or a professional tag such as AdamJonesCPAgmail.com.You also want to show that youre keeping up with the times by ditching old email providers like Hotmail or Lycos. There are plenty of great email providers to choose from and Gmail is the gold standard today. If you still like your Hotmail account, just switch it to Outlook to show that you, too, can change with the times when looking for jobs.2. Your use of fun fontsMost resumes look so boring, right? Yep. And thats okay. You heard the same thing from your Freshman Composition teacher, Use a basic font, 12pt. Always. Why so boring? How will your resume stand out? manga Sans or other goofy fonts dont show your creativity to employers, they show that you dont know the rules of the game. Your accomplishments on your resume should do the talking, not the font.If youre not confident that you know the best way to format your resume and avoid job search mistakes, hire a r eputable resume service to do it for you.3. Your voicemail messageYour cover letter and resume got an employers attention. Congratulations But, if they give you a call and end up getting your voicemail and it sounds like this, Hey there, its Dougie, I cant come to the phone right now because Im out killin this towns tequila supply They are not likely to leave a message or call back. Ever.Again, it may sound boring, but you want your message to be simple and to the point, especialy when looking for jobs. Hi, youve reached Doug. I cant answer your call right now, but leave your name and number and Ill get back to you just as soon as I can.4. Your interview attireId like to take this one a step further. Its not just about dressing professionally for your interview. Carefully consider what you wear any time youll have contact with an employer. Even if you are just picking up an application or dropping one off, youll leave an impression. If that impression involves jeans with holes in th em, a backwards ball cap, or a skirt that leaves nothing to the imagination, they wont need to look at your application to make a decision. When it comes to the interview itself, consider what attire is appropriate for the position youre gunning for and then step it up one level. Its always better to err on the side of classy to avoid job search mistakes.5. You get too personal at the interviewYou want your potential employer to get a feel for you as a person, not just a resume, right? Yes, to a point. Its okay, even beneficial, to list charitable passions or hobbies that are relevant to the job, but it can also be easy to say the wrong thing at an interview. They dont need to hear about your love life, medical details, or affinity for cat videos. Aim for keeping the conversation personable, not personal.6. You dont do your homeworkInterviewers expect you to come into an interview with knowledge of their company. Why would you apply if you dont know anything about them? Go to their w ebsite and find some interesting tidbits that are most relevant to your area of expertise and work them into conversation. Have a couple of questions ready, too, because they will ask if you have questions.Remember this piece of advice when looking for jobs if you come to the interview acting like theyre just another company theyll treat you like just another applicant. At the end of the day, these arent meant to take your personality out of your job hunt, youll have plenty of ways to let your personality shine while also showing that you understand the basic rules of the process. When you show that you are not only a qualified candidate, but a professional individual, youll separate yourself from the rest of the pack.Hire a TopResume writer to help you land more interviews, faster.Related Articles
